NextLOGiK (developers of CompWALK) began as the IT department of COLA Inc., a provider of clinical laboratory compliance and accreditation solutions in the United States for more than 20 years. When Kirk Couser, CEO of NextLOGiK, started at COLA he recognized that there were many repetitive, manual tasks involved in their accreditation process, paired with little collaboration between the laboratories they accredit. By creating a web-based customer portal, he was able to revolutionize the way these labs interacted with COLA, forming a partnership to better serve their patients. Previously, COLA surveyors interacted with laboratories every two years during their onsite assessment. Now, laboratories are able to prepare for assessments, share findings with COLA and improve areas of concern year-round. This transformation would later be recognized by Microsoft when Kirk’s team was awarded the Healthcare Industry Leadership Award for their development and implementation of advanced technology solutions.
It was soon clear that similar accreditation and certification bodies could benefit from the introduction of technology to improve business processes. Many organizations are still relying on outdated, paper-laden methods of data collection, input and analysis. Field workers are completing lengthy assessments by hand and inputting data inconsistently; when there is an incident it takes weeks to uncover and even longer to resolve. As a result, Kirk and COLA’s IT and support professionals formed NextLOGiK in order to serve these compliance and quality related organizations and make the best use of technology while eliminating lag and complexity.
CompWALK for Accreditation
Now operating as a wholly owned subsidiary of COLA, NextLOGiK has expanded its development and distribution of CompWALK. It is offered as two platforms, one supporting basic inspection needs and the other a more comprehensive enterprise solution to atuomate accreditation processes.
NextLOGiK developed CompWALK, a cloud-based, online and mobile solution that automates compliance, inspections, and certification operations. CompWALK reduces the time it takes to complete assessments and issue reports while storing and managing all documentation in a singular repository. By automating many manual, time-consuming tasks and migrating the data collection process to the cloud, CompWALK allows organizations to conduct assessments efficiently, from anywhere, saving them time and resources.
CompWALK Enterprise supports more complex business operations surrounding accreditation, including scheduling automation, workflow automation, client portal and educational opportunities
The scheduling platform uses GPS data to track, schedule, and manage a mobile workforce, giving clients insight into where their employees are and mapping out efficient routes of travel. CompWALK’s workflow module provides both automation and consistency to business processes, eliminating the need for manual intervention and the risk of human error. Taking into account outlined business rules, the workflow can be configured to follow different paths for a given scenario, generate documents, send email notifications and monitor for events to occur. The client portal enables collaboration between customers and accrediting bodies through online self assessments, personnel management, document storage and staff communication all on one, seamless platform.
The final piece of CompWALK Enterprise focuses on continually improving quality processes. This is done through educational opportunities tied directly to citations or incidents uncovered during assessments. Providing the educational resources to customers immediately following an assessment to solve major or minor infractions is a proactive approach to compliance and accreditation, positioning customers for success and instilling quality in their daily operations.
CompWALK Enterprise utilizes over 20 years of intellectual property in compliance and healthcare to eliminate inefficiencies in accreditation and certification organizations. The Enterprise platform aids quality processes for more than half of the private clinical laboratory accreditation market in the United States and is trusted by over 11,000 laboratories worldwide.
In addition to partnering with COLA in the United States, NextLOGiK works closely with global accrediting bodies, including one of only three accrediting agencies in North America that is accredited by the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua). CompWALK’s systems oversee healthcare services in over 80 countries.
Since COLA has introduced technology to improve business processes, they have only begun to reap the benefits. They have been able to differentiate themselves from other accreditation organizations by offering continued support and collaboration for their laboratories through their client portal. By housing their self assessments and educational tools within the portal, labs can access these resources year-round for continued improvement. With over 250,000 documents uploaded to the online portal – which were previously printed and mailed to COLA – they have saved an estimated 3,840 trees. A definite win for the environment!
With surveyors visiting labs across the nation, travel logistics were one of COLA’s highest expenses. It took one full-time employee a month to schedule the next month’s surveys, taking into account laboratory deadlines, surveyor’s abilities, travel restrictions and time off. A large portion of their business relied on one scheduler showing up every day, with no long term plan taking into account sickness, extended vacation, or this person winning the lottery. After implementing the CompWALK scheduling platform, COLA immediately started to see results. There is no human element to the system, which eliminates favoritism or preferential treatment, and all deadlines are tracked to ensure surveys are completed on time. The system was able to produce an optimized survey schedule in minutes, compared to weeks.
